Enjoying Good Things with Great Friends

My Cover Story

I am raised and born in Singapore, and 16 years-old as of now. Aside from studying, I practise web-based designs (and digital arts) as well playing the guitar, which is a new hobby I picked up. During my secondary school years, I was involved in both the dance club and the drama club. You can read about them in my blog, which circles around my life in school.

The alias Day was derived from the first syllabus of my name, Damien. I first used it when I wanted to add a Japanese honorific to my name, but decided that something like Damien-chan sounds weird. Lockheart was inspired by Tifa Lockhart, a character in my favorite gaming series - Final Fantasy. Of course, it meant something to me as well.

I just love to write about daily happenings, from the outings I have with my great friends to the boring stuffs I encounter in School everyday. I’m neither sophisticated nor simplistic, just a boy living in a crazy world.

Police and Their "Powers"

Posted at 07:54pm on 13 December 2007

Flag as Offensive

I don't really know to get angry or laugh out loud watching this video. This is actually a good demonstration of: if you can't reason out, you abuse your powers.

I still I don't understand why they have only "this is a protected area" (and other variations) as an excuse. You can see people walking up and down the very same route, cars driving along the same lanes and there, only this woman named Chee Siok Chin is being targeted.

Some background information to note to justify this post, is that Chee Siok Chin is from the SDP (Singapore Democrats Party) and she is heading towards the Shangri-la Hotel, where Asia leaders were residing at. As for the motive, go figure, this is not evident and should not be used to justify the actions of the police force.

Even if, when assumed that she is trying to win the influence of such leaders, it would only be fair for one to exercise one's speech, ain't it? After all, I was taught that Singapore is a democratic nation.

Personally, this is simply absurd. The police were unable to provide useful answers to questions. Maybe they are just abiding to what they have learnt at the academy, that if they said something out of their personal opinion which may end up wrong, can lead to serious consequences. If the police were informed that such people are blacklisted, wouldn't the efforts have gone wasted if Chee Siok Chin got someone else who is not listed to go instead? Hence, the so-called motive would be a success and all that patrolling would have gone wasted.

When I'm making this post, and having watched that video, I can't help but to feel something like this would get people into trouble. Well, why not, since free-speech is no longer endorsed, much like the abandoned speakers' corner. This is just like having a sign in the park that writes "pee here if you want" in bold red text, with a tiny line of text barely visible reading "and get prosecuted." But I remembered once that someone told me that if there's such thing as free speech, people may abuse it and plans will backfire.

Politics interest me, but I'm not into taking sides. So my standpoint here sums up to:
- Banning of free speech is not ideal, yet if exercised, it should not be used as a tool to eliminate opposition parties.
