Hi SY,
One of my personal goals have also been to serve as a source of inspiration to fellow Singaporeans, especially the younger ones and so it is indeeed a pleasant surprise to be hearing from you. I think I have heard of your company before.
Thanks for considering me in your documentary series and yes, I do have a few questions for you.
1) Where and when will the episode be aired?
2) How long will the episode be?
3) Will I be paid?
4) Will you come to me to film me? In a sense, I might be out in the deserts of the Beijing suburbs during that time.
Also, I would need you to promise that you would give me a copy of the finished episode on DVD or tape because I have been doing alot of work where I don't get to see eventually.
A little on myself.
I started my acting career acting for theatre in Singapore with companies like The Theatre Practice, The Necessary Stage and Theatreworks. Then for a seemingly insignificant reason (I was inspired by a movie back then), I started backpacking all over East Asia for 6 months, from Singapore to Japan overland. That allowed me to learn heaps about myself and made me sure that I was going to be a full time actor regardless of the insecurities that were involved in the career choice.
So, I went to London to do my Masters in Theatre (my basic degree was a finance degree from SIM). Then from my time in London, I decided that I was too general as an actor (with no special skill for anyone to remember me by). So I decided to learn Kung Fu in Beijing to make myself unique as an actor and I did. Halfway through though, I injured my lower back and was in pain for a full year, if not more.
So that dampened my dreams (at that time) of becoming an internationally acclaimed movement actor but interestingly, gave me thoughts of doing film and TV jobs and with some beginner's luck, I got casted in 'One Last Dance', which opened in Singapore recently.
And even more interestingly, for reasons that are too long to tell here, I started to get offered acting, directing and writing jobs in Hong Kong and Macau. Most recently, I performed my solo theatre show last December in those two places.
I also had to learn to speak Cantonese from scatch to cope with those work I did.
And at the same time too, film and TV jobs started to happening for me in mainland China. In spring and summer of 2006, I was casted in two American mini series that were shooting in China.
My real break (I would think) came this Feb when I was casted in a 25 episode Sony TV series as one of the principal cast. The show has yet to air but hopefully it will attract alot of attention and do my career more good. There is news that the show would travel to all over SE Asia, Korea, and Japan too.
These are of course, the happier parts of the journey. There were terrible moments of hitting dry spells and not getting jobs (especially in 2005), paying your dues and serving time before the first sight of light would come. Also, there's always the constant worry about when and where your next job would be. And at times, just feeling that your whole mental health was at stake because of the lifestyle you have chosen, not to mention missing my family and friends back home. All in all, I think I have been relying almost totally on hope and courage for survival all these years. It's tough.
So, still interested?
Oh, what am I up to now? Just a few hours ago, I got an offer to be an assistant casting director for the Hollywood blockbuster 'The Mummy 3' that will be shooting till end of November in Beijing and Shanghai. Talking rates now.
And no, I guess I won't be home for Christmas. I am currently talking to friends who reside in Los Angeles about thoughts of possibly moving to there myself (in bits). So, I might start that this winter.
